Micropolis

Micropolis aims to educate Sydney in the fascinating world of microbes. Based on Micropia in the Netherlands, Micropolis plans to engage people in the fascinating science of microbiology.

Branding and pitch material was created with a group of eight other students as a final year project in University. The brief was to establish the branding ready for our client pitch to stakeholders.

The design of Micropolis is based on the colours microbes appear under two different lights, daylight and ultra violet light to highlight the beauty of the unseen world.

My moodboard.
I was inspired by the use of bold colours, vector graphics and photography layered on top of one another. As a group we ended up opting for just vector based graphics as we later found out how hard it was to get photos of microbes from the client.
The logo concepts I had developed further based on the initial ideas the team had brainstormed.
Colour palette v1.
The colour palette I created was chosen by the team and to be pitched to the client. I did not base these colours on anything and just thought they looked nice together.

I later learned that it’s always best to have a reason for making design choices like colours which I adapted afterwards.
“Old” colour palette, v2 (left) and “New” colour palette v3 (right).
These colour palettes were created based on feedback from the client after sending the pitch deck.

I created both colour palettes, and colour palette v3 was used in the final style guide and branding for Micropolis.

The colour palette was based on colours I could see from the photos supplied from the client of microbes when daylight and ultra violet light was shone on them.

The client’s feedback from v2 was to add more greens, pinks and blues to show a wider range of colours the microbes can grow to.
